Implementation of Comprehensive Sexuality Education (CSE) across schools and community settings often remains fragmented, uneven, and dependent on short-term interventions. The critical gap is not the absence of curricula or resources, but the lack of trained, reflective, and confident educators who are consistently supported to facilitate meaningful conversations with young people.
To address this gap, Prayas Health Group launched the SAHAJ Educators’ Fellowship Program to build a strong pool of sexuality educators across Maharashtra who can meaningfully integrate CSE into their ongoing work with children and young people.
This is a nine-month hybrid fellowship program, consisting of 10 days of in-person workshops, 100+ hours of structured self-learning and assessments, and continuous mentoring. The program brings together participants from diverse parts of Maharashtra, who are working or willing to work with children in schools and communities, strengthening their knowledge base, facilitation skills, confidence, and ability to integrate sexuality education into everyday practice.
Core Themes of the Fellowship:
• Reflection on personal values and belief systems and their influence in our practice.
• Developing a rights-based and value-driven approach to Comprehensive Sexuality Education (CSE)
• Scientific foundations of reproductive health, including puberty, sexual development of children, pregnancy, contraception, abortion, HIV, and STIs
• Concepts of sex, gender, sexuality, gender identity, and sexual orientation
• Age-appropriate Comprehensive Sexuality Education (CSE) and its application across developmental stages
• Dynamics of relationships, including consent, coercion, choice, and indicators of healthy and unhealthy relationships
• Building facilitation skills that are rights-based, pleasure centric, gender-responsive, and trauma-informed
• Adapting and contextualizing the SAHAJ curriculum across diverse educational and community settings.
The structure of the fellowship includes collaborative work among fellows, intensive self-reflection, monthly assessments, group and individual presentations. It also supports participants in developing a structured plan to implement CSE in their existing work, along with one-on-one mentoring sessions and on-ground support for implementation in their respective contexts.
Fellows of the program have shown greater comfort in engaging with sexuality-related topics, deeper scientific and social understanding, and a more inclusive, rights-based facilitation approach, supported by strong peer learning and mentorship. Fellowship alumni are now actively working across Maharashtra in rural, tribal, urban, and semi-urban contexts, engaging with schools, communities, and young people. Through this program, Prayas Health Group aims to strengthen the sexuality education ecosystem by supporting individuals committed to children’s well-being.
